What is the name of the grain/meal frequently used in Mexican food?

It's a type of grain/meal that you mix with water, flatten out, and fry. But, for the life of me I can't remember the name.

it can be described as corn meal although its milled at this point with water,fat ,salt to make -masa , where you either talently flatten (much like a pizza crust is handled ) only with a smaller shape then cook on griddle ( comal -old = hammered iron /newer = cast iron ) both work great

and of coarse you have the tortilla press ,better known as la prensa ( which can also mean metiche's or papparazi HA ! HA ! HEEE ! ) oh yea almost forgot -the fried stuff are called tostadas /tortilla chips
Masa de Harina. It's very different than corn meal or corn flour. It's made from dried pozole (hominy). It has a very different texture, doesn't contain the hull and is actually more nutritious. Corn meal or flour won't work for making masa, tortillas, sopes, etc. You can get a 5 lb. bag in the ethnic section of most decent sized markets or any hispanic market. Corn meal....most mexicans make it almost everyday. It is used in many dishes, including tortillas. I have been to Mexico many times and seen this process done
corn flour/ corn meal.



This is the same product but it is just milled to different degrees of thickness.

It's called Masa.
Yes it's masa and there are different kinds.Some are made out of corn,some are made from flour.
Jimbell, Serena and others have it right. The most famous brand name is Maseca.
Masa (coarse cornmeal flour)? Or masa de harina?

im not totally sure but i think its corn meal.
