Hard to get the real completely authentic thing. But if you go to communities with a large Mexican immigrant population, and go to places where it's mostly Mexicans eating there (rather than mostly white people) it's probably somewhat close to the real thing. Even then, they serve things like nachos which aren't authentic at all but are popular in America. Taco trucks are generally the most authentic thing around here, closely followed by taquerias. In my experience, most sit down Mexican restaurants, the ones with margarita menus and huge hot plates overflowing with Spanish rice and refried beans, are always not very authentic, even if they are not a chain restaurant.



Hard shelled tacos, taco salad, mayonnaise based dips (wtf?), fried ice cream, and ground beef are red flags that it is not authentic. Same with a kitchen staff that is not Mexican - while this is rare for any kind of restaurant, I have been to a taco place with a white kitchen staff and it was the worst food I have ever seen (I didn't eat any!). If the menu has meats you have never heard of, like buche or lengua, that's fairly authentic.
That's tough to answer.

It is difficult to find a restaurant like what they have in mexico, but realize that it also depends on where you ate in Mexico. At a beach? On the border? Depending on what part of Mexico you ate in, the food there could have been americanized too.

Stay away from the overdone restaurant chains. Find a small, family run restaurant for the best, authentic Mexican food.
