What type of mexican food is this?

My roommate used to make these delicious things that were eaten with your hands, they were basically a circular, stiff (fried?) taco that formed the base, covered with meat, cheese, salsa, avocados, and sauce. Also if anyone has any good recipes please share. What type of mexican food is this?
those were either tostadas or "sopes"..

sopes are more of a "masa"(corn paste) and the "base" is much thicker than the tortilla that is used in tostadas

yum yum!!

Those sound like chalupas to me. I used to make those all the time for my kids; they loved them.
yes they are tostadas. Im from New Mexico and there are some really good tostadas here. try blue corn tortillas. fry them in oil until they are still. Mash pinto beans and use as a spread over the shell, then add ur fave garnish! lettuce tomato guacamole salsa sour cream. Anything! U can also try making your own chile. ( fyi not Chili, thats not a real name for it...) make a rue using flour and oil, id say 1/2 cup flower to 3tbs oil. let it sort of brown in your pan, once that happens add water to it, not a lot, use a large cup and add it little by little to desired thickness, (thicker the better) add red chile powder, let boil. THERE YOU HAVE IT! Real northern new mexican chile. What type of mexican food is this?
Tostadas can be found already packaged, but if you don't have any around, you can just fry corn tortllas in oil until they are golden brown.

You spread them with refried beans and shredded meat, either chicken, beef or pork. You then add thin slices of tomato, onion and avocado, and shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, cream and salsa. Not everything Mexican has to use chilies, in fact we live in Mexico and what we eat mostly omits hot chiles, like serrano and jalape帽o, in our case, chiles are used provide color and flavor without the hot element people normally associate with it.
